The Forward Tip Dumper category of plant can be found on most construction sites throughout the world and is a very useful category to hold.
Its main purpose is transporting materials from A to B but has other uses as well. The forward tipping dumper is usually a 4 wheel drive articulating machine with a ‘skip’ on the front and the engine at the back which acts as a counterbalance.
An engine mounted hydraulic pump is used to supply the oil flow to the rams that control the steering and tipping mechanism. Most Forward Tip Dumpers are fitted with a ROPS (Roll Over Protective Structure) to prevent the operator from being crushed if the machine rolls over. They range from between 1 and 10 tonne carrying capacity, any more and the larger rear tip dumper may be required.
Forward Tip Dumpers are usually referred to by their carrying capacity i.e. a 2 tonne dumper does not weigh 2 tonnes, this is its maximum carrying capacity.
The skip can be raised up vertically allowing the dumper to tip into other skips or objects that would normally be too high. Care should be taken with this mechanism as they are inherently unstable and should only be operated on firm level ground.
